Parking near Barwon Health McKellar Centre

The changes to staff parking at the Barwon Health McKellar Centre are having a serious negative impact on the local community. To date discussions with Barwon Health have not resulted in any improvements, in fact the situation seems to have worsened. I am concerned that the increasing traffic congestion and angst in the community is leading to an unsafe situation for local residents.

Background

Earlier this evening I presented to Council a petition of approximately 136 signatures from concerned residents living in the neighbouring streets to the Barwon Health McKellar Centre, 45-95 Ballarat Road, North Geelong.

This petition calls for Barwon Health staff to park in the McKellar Centre carpark rather than in surrounding roads and streets which is causing dangerous traffic congestion and distress to the residents in the neighbourhood.

Late last year, Barwon Health decided to charge its staff for on-site carparking. This parking was previously provided free of charge. Since then, we have seen an increase in the number of staff parking in local streets causing a negative impact on local businesses and unsafe situations for residents trying to enter and/or leave their own houses.

I have met with senior staff from Barwon Health and while I understand that they have made this decision for good business reasons, the impact of this decision on the local residents is unacceptable.

That Council:

  1. notes the concerns of the local residents surrounding the Grace McKellar Centre as presented in the petition;

  2. write to Barwon Health Chief Executive Officer, Professor David Ashbridge, outlining the concerns of the local residents impacted by the decision about McKellar Centre staff carparking, and on behalf of the community present him with the petition.

Cr Nelson re-entered the meeting room at 9:29pm
