Urgent Business

Note: Introduction of Urgent Business requires a two-thirds majority vote.

Cr Fisher proposes to raise the following item as Urgent Business:

Cr Fisher moved, Cr Macdonald seconded -

That Council considers as Urgent Business a motion concerning World Autism Awareness Day.

Carried.

Background

World Autism Awareness Day is supported by thousands of people around Victoria, as well as across Australia and around the world.

We are extremely lucky to have a dedicated group of parents and care givers in Geelong who have brought a version of Melbourne’s Autism Walk to Geelong.

The walk has been in Geelong for 2 years, this year being the 3rd, and is extremely successful with around 500 people participating and a particular highlight of the Geelong Walk as well as Ballarat’s Walk is a “Balloon Release” that signifies unity for all those attending.

Council has provided support to each of the walks through our events unit and through Councillor and Mayoral attendance, though each year we have had discussions around a “balloon release”, and this year is no different.

The organizers have gone to lengths to make sure all balloons and string are biodegradable so as not to harm the environment.

The report tonight asks that Council allow a balloon release for the 2014 Autism Walk being held on Sunday, 6 April.

Cr Fisher moved, Cr Ansett seconded -

That:

  1. Council resolves to allow a Balloon Release for the 2014 Autism Walk being held on 6 April;

  2. a further report come back to Council on future balloon releases in the municipality.

Carried.
