Question Time - Ordinary Meeting of Council - 9 June 2015

The following questions were addressed to the above meeting. Some questions were adequately responded to at the meeting, however others required a more detailed response in writing.

This document includes both verbal and written responses. In this instance, no written responses were provided as issues were adequately addressed at the meeting.

Peter and Glenys Poehland thanked all Councillors for their attention to their earlier presentations in relation to Amendment C265 Flood Overlays with a special thank you to Cr Ellis and Peter Bettess for their in depth follow up in the matter. Their findings have supported our views and presentations that our home is above the 1 in 100 year event flooding.

Cr Ellis thanked Mr Poehland for his attendance and advised that the matter will be dealt with in Item 1.

The Mayor also thanked Mr Poehland for his attendance at the Meeting.

Adrian Schonfelder addressed Council in relation to the Geelong Saleyards:

City of Greater Geelong is one of the largest municipalities in Victoria and is wealthy as an entity. The City has a responsibility to all ratepayers and residents even if they are non urban in status. The Geelong Saleyards are an essential asset to farming communities in the City of Greater Geelong and to neighbouring Council areas, including Golden Plains and the Surfcoast. The Flinders Street Station is still used despite plans to demolish the building in previous times and the Geelong Saleyards do you concur can be modernised to create a Regional Saleyard Centre?

The Mayor responded the Geelong Saleyards report will be discussed later this evening and I am sure all Councillors have their own views on the subject.

A subsequent written response was provided by the General Manager City Services in the following terms:

I refer to your question as raised in public question time at the Council Meeting on 9 June 2014 relating to the future of the Geelong Saleyards and acknowledge your concerns.

It is important to note, at this stage, Council has not made a decision to close the facility, but is looking at the longer term options. Council did resolve to work with neighbouring Council’s to develop a suitable regional solution that would meet the needs of both the community and the livestock industry within the region.

The 2014 Geelong Saleyards Feasibility Study highlights a decline in livestock throughput, not only in Geelong, but across the State. These factors along with the loss of the main office building to fire highlight the need to find a longer term sustainable solution.

It is expected that both the neighbouring Councils of Surfcoast and Golden Plains will be involved in the engagement process.

Should you have any questions regarding any of the above please do not hesitate to contact me on 5272 4317.

Jennifer Bantow asked if Council has a prioritised list of assets that Council is considering to sell?

John Brown responded there is a Sale of Assets Schedule which supports the budget approved by Council last year.

A subsequent written response was provided by the Manager Administration and Governance in the following terms:

In response to your question at Council’s Ordinary Meeting of 9 June 2015 and our subsequent phone discussion, I have attached a schedule of Council’s heritage assets.

If you would like to discuss the schedule further Mr Kevin Krastins our Community Development Planner can assist you. Kevin can be contacted on 5272 4043.
