Notice of Motion tabled at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on 15 December 2020 which was held virtually by Zoom and broadcast on the City's website.
During the COVID-19 pandemic Council approved free parking initiatives as part of its support for the community in response to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Council has an ongoing commitment to the community to provide appropriate support and relief throughout the period of restrictions and beyond in terms of recovery.
On 25 August 2020 Council approved free casual on and off-street parking in the Geelong CBD from 31 August to 31 December 2020.
With the end of free casual parking, the City will resume its 30-minute free parking trial in 2P spaces until 30 June 2021.
The information collected from the trial will be considered by Council in determining the longer-term policy position on free parking in the Geelong CBD.
Free 2-hour on street parking is a key support that the Council could continue to provide to support a thriving Geelong CBD, particularly as we continue to recover from the impacts of COVID.
To assist Council to consider whether to continue free 2-hour parking, a report is requested from the Chief Executive Officer that considers the opportunity to provide free parking in 2-hour on street parking spaces in Central Geelong.
Councillor Kontelj moved, Councillor Moloney seconded -
That Council request the Chief Executive Officer to present a report to Council in February 2021 regarding the potential benefits and implications if Council was to support free parking in 2-hour on street parking for a 12-month period.
Carried.
