Notices of Motion tabled at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on 28 April 2015 which was held at Portarlington Cricket and Football Club in 4-46 Province Boulevard, Highton.
Concerns have been raised about the AFL Barwon’s overage policy and whether this policy supports children with a disability being able to participate in a game of football.
An overage policy enables children to be able to play down an age level under certain circumstances.
The AFL itself in its Australian Football Match Policy gives junior leagues the ability to grant permission to a player to play down an age level where a legitimate reason exists such as physical capacity or disability.
The success of policies such as these is heavily reliant on the willingness of organisations to consider the intent of the policy in its application.
It’s of concern that children with a disability may be missing the opportunity to participate in Australian Rules Football.
To this end, and to ensure that children with a disability get the best opportunity to participate in a game of footy with their friends that Council seek clarification from the AFL Barwon Commission about its own policy and how it encourages, promotes and enables children with disability to play football.
Cr Fisher moved, Cr Heagney seconded -
That Council write as a matter of urgency, to the AFL Barwon Commission raising concerns about its current overage policy and seeking advice and information about how it encourages and supports children with a disability to play football down an age level or at all with any clubs in the region.
Carried.
