Notices of Motion tabled at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on 27 November 2018 which was held at the Council Conference and Reception Centre in City Hall, 57 Little Malop Street, Geelong.
To seek Council approval for a once-off budget allocation in 2018-19 of $10,000 (ex GST) to support the 2019 Pako Festa.
The Pako Festa is one of Victoria’s largest multicultural events held right here in the Geelong community. It is a hallmark event for Geelong that sets the benchmark for integrating multi-cultural communities into a single event. People from around Australia and the world identify Geelong as a multi-cultural community and the Pako Festa is Geelong’s signature event to celebrate and promote the diversity of cultures that are present in Greater Geelong.
Pako Festa uniquely brings together a myriad of different cultures to share their traditional music, food and clothing. The event is popular year on year, with over 100,000 people coming together to celebrate our community’s diversity and vibrancy at Pako Festa.
Geelong Major Events currently provide $72,000 funding to the 2019 Pako Festa program. Recently, Diversitat, the event organiser, approached Council seeking additional funding of $10,000 to meet their substantial increasing costs associated with holding the event, including the costs of mitigating risk, insurance and personnel.
In further recognition of the regional significance of Pako Festa, it is worth noting that the State Government has just announced an increase in annual funding for the event from $100,000 to $150,000 which will be used to off-set the ever-increasing costs of holding the event, as well as to assist in promoting the event and supporting the many programs associated with the event.
The local economic return from holding Pako Festa is substantial, with people travelling from Melbourne and interstate to participate in the event.
It is amazing to see over 50 countries come together to celebrate their collective diverse way of life, and the importance of this event continuing warrants consideration by Council of the request for additional funding from Diversitat.
